MUN: Short for Model United Nations. It is an extra-curricular activity that takes place in many schools in which students take the role of delegates in the United Nations. They simulate committees and debates, with chairs as leaders of each council. Just like the United Nations, MUN has a Secretary General and a Deputy Secretary General, who, with the help of the Press and Admin teams organizes the whole activity. The International School of Basel is usually the host for “BAMUN” (Basel MUN) where it welcomes three or more other schools such as the Black Forest Academy, the International School of Zurich, and the School of Montana over the course of one weekend. After each committee debates its topics for one and one-half days, the General Assembly takes place, chaired by the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General. Proceeding the General Assembly, a closing/awards ceremony takes place, where the best delegate in each committee, as well as best Press or Admin member, receive an award certificate. Thousands of schools take part in Model United Nations each year, which involves a considerable amount of research, speech, debate, teamwork, and leadership. In this year’s BAMUN, there will be eight committees: Security Council, War Council, Economic and Social Council, Disarmament Council, Human Rights Council, Political Council, and a new addition- the International Criminal Council.
